Pick of the Week! Aug 3rd
Pick of the Week – August 3rd
By Kristof65
If you’re a wargamer, I’m sure you’ve imagined it – thousands of miniature soldiers lined up across the tabletop battlefield, ready to pounce all over your hapless opponent as you unleash your perfect battle strategy and lucky dice. Yet making that a reality in the most common scale these days – 28mm – assembling and painting thousands of figures, assuming you can afford them and then finding a tabletop big enough to hold them all – the mere thought of all that money and work leaves it in the realm of imagination for most of us.
And yet, there is a way to make thinking big a reality – by thinking smaller. 10mm small, to be exact. Wargames Factory has given (or is about to give) us wonderful 28mm versions of Numidians, Germans, Vikings, Celts and more. It’s time to translate those sculpts into a scale that allows for truly grand battles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This week’s pick of the week is the DARK AGES/FANTASY 10/12MM Army

This entry didn’t take long after posting to gather 300 or so preorders, but it’s kind of stalled out since then, gathering only 17 preorders in the last 60 days.
There are many games that cater to 10-12mm gaming, with Warmaster and it’s kin Warmaster Ancients and Warmaster Historicals, being the most well known specifically tailored to that scale. However, many games like Fields of Glory, DBA, etc, can be played at this smaller scale which allows bigger battlefields and larger armies – without necessarily breaking the bank. And 10mm armies can paint up pretty fast – since you only need them to look good in large masses, you don’t have to mess with the fiddly details as much, if you don’t want to – drybrushing and dipping techniques work wonders at this scale.
In addition to being a 10-12mm gamer myself, I chose this as the pick of the week because there are virtually no plastics available in this size. The only ones I’m aware of are from GWs out of print and hard to get of the Five Armies boxed game. Army building at this scale is pretty affordable in pewter, and there is a wide selection, but in plastic this army would let you build a respectable sized army for half the cost (or less) of pewter. Heck, this army could become affordable enough for you to give entire armies away as gifts! What better way to find opponents than giving them armies?
At the smaller scale, not as much detail is needed, and so clever selection of the actual figures included on the sprues should allow this submission to truly be a Generic Dark Ages/Fantasy army, and cover a lot of realms, both historical and fantastical.
